This year Lucha Underground, in the middle of its third season, is taking a hiatus. They shot forty episodes and took a break after #19. This was not the original plan.
The El Rey Network apparently called an audible, and requested this break. A really long break. In fact, we will not see new episodes until Summer 2017, with the premiere date yet to be announced. This is problematic not only for fans of the show, but the talent themselves.
According to the Wrestling Observer, the hiatus came as a major shock to the performers, and they are not happy. The majority of the wrestlers are under an exclusive television contract with Lucha Underground which prevents them from taking opportunities in other promotions like Ring of Honor and TNA. They only get paid when they're taping new episodes, and with everything being pushed back, they won't be making new episodes until November. The talent reportedly is not happy with this decision and are locked into their contracts so they don't have many options.
