Maven explains why he didn't feel it was necessary for him to join Triple H, Batista, and Ric Flair in Evolution following the 2004 WWE Survivor Series event.
On the November 15, 2004 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, Maven was in the spotlight as he served as General Manager for the night in exchange for being on the winning team of the Surivvor Series 2004 main event. Survivor Series saw Maven with Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, and Randy Orton to defeat Gene Snitsky, Batista, Edge, and Triple H.
As GM, Maven naturally gave himself a World Title match against Triple H. Triple H, the consummate professional and the man everybody loved to hate atop Monday Night Raw at the time, offered Maven the opportunity to potentially sit under the learning tree with him and Ric Flair as a new member of Evolution. Maven turned it down, and the match would occur, with Triple H defeating Maven to retain the World Title.
During a recent interview with Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp, Maven explained why he thought it made more sense for him not to join the group. He admits that he preferred playing a villain and that he likes it when people ask him why he chose not to join the group.
"I love it when people ask. I love it when people get mad. They're like, 'Why didn't you join?!' If you remember, at that time, after the Survivor Series. The following night, the Raw in Indianapolis was. That was my night as GM, and then there were three more. I mean, we were running the month out with guys from that Survivor Series who were going to be, in essence, GM for the night.
"It really made no sense for, let's say, I go out and then shock the world, and Hunter turns the strap over to me," continued Maven. "Well, then what? Am I going to have the guys that I was just teaming with chasing me down? Not exactly. That doesn't really make sense. What does make sense is me having my first run at it, failing, and then seeing the guys that I was tagging with still advancing the ball for them, and then me getting upset with it and turning heel. When I turned heel, man, that's when I started having the most fun in the business. To this day, I vastly like, love being a heel way more than a face."
