The Kliq always delivered.
In the world of professional wrestling, real-life friendships can translate to magical in-ring chemistry. Such is the case in 1994 as Shawn Michaels teamed with Diesel to go against Razor Ramon and the 1-2-3 Kid.
The match, which aired on the October 30, 1994 episode of WWE Action Zone, set the pace for what was at the time going to be a major new TV series for WWE. As is the case with modern shows like WWE Main Event, sometimes the matches on the first handful of episodes on the shows feature major superstars in order to keep fans tuning in for years to come.
Reflecting on this match with Sean Ross Sapp, Sean Waltman stated that despite the audience in White Plains, New York having seen so much WWE action in that same venue, the four members of The Kliq were able to create Magic with one another and they did so by taking tropes of the standard tag team match and turning it upside down.
“That was at White Plains, Westchester Memorial. We ran that building to death, Sean,” Waltman recalled. “We must have done TV there every other week, it seemed like, or once a month. Those people had seen everything and then said some, that night especially. We’re on last or almost end of the night, the people were spent. We knew after that match that we crushed it. Looking back at it, I’m really proud of that. It’s one of the best matches I’ve ever been in. Honestly man, as far as WWE tag team matches go, it’s one of the best they’ve ever had,” he continued.
The Kliq prided themselves on changing the stereotypical format. Shawn Michaels recently stated that The Kliq was bringing in the Attitude Era before it was even on anybody's radar. That same mentality translated whenever the group worked together.
“So the thing about that match is we went against conventional wisdom. Razor ended up taking the heat in that and usually, that’s my job. I took a little bit of heat, too, so he could come in and boom-boom-boom. But Razor took the heat and I made the big hot tag. That’s kind of backwards for how we usually did it. But, man, it worked so good,” he added.
Now, Sean Waltman is returning to the ring and he will continue his comeback at GCW Welcome to Heartbreak, available on FITE on February 25.
