George Hackenschmidt is recognized as the first heavyweight champion in professional wrestling.
Hackenschmidt competed around the world in various wrestling tournaments and is credited for creating the bear hug. Along with his wrestling acumen, Hackenschmidt competed in weight lifting and kept a strict diet to remain in top shape.

Hackenschmidt was recognized as the World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion after a victory in New York City over Tom Jenkins in 1905. He remained undefeated until losing the title to Frank Gotch in 1908.
Hackenschmidt was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016.
