Io Shirai Discusses Heel Turn & Potential Main Roster Dream Matches

Io Shirai says her change of heart has given her boost.

Io Shirai spoke to the Hindustan Times recently and discussed her character change. "The Genius of the Sky" talked about wanting to differ herself from WWE's resident Joshi, Asuka and Kairi Sane and how the new character has elevated her game.

AEW Rampage New Year's Smash (12/27/2024) Results: Nick Wayne vs. HOOK, Thunder Rosa, Chris Jericho

"To the fans, my character changed suddenly. But I took a long time to think about it and it was a gradual process for me. When I came to WWE, I wanted to try out something different. They already had Asuka and Kairi (Sane)," she said. "So, I wanted to show something new. I wanted to show a new side of Japanese woman wrestlers. I have mainly been a babyface in my career but I wanted to make a big change."

Shirai would go on to credit the turn as a confidence booster for her in her WWE career.

"This has given me more confidence. The heel turn has added a lot of new things to my character and that has certainly boosted my confidence. I came with a different role but this change has been a boost for me."

Io would also name Saha Banks, Asuka, and Charlotte as her dream opponents on Raw and SmackDown. Catch Io every Wednesday on NXT on USA Network.
