JBL thinks very highly of Gunther.
During the June 10 episode of WWE SmackDown, Gunther defeated Ricochet to become the new Intercontinental Champion. This was Gunther's first title victory on WWE's main roster and it came just two months after making the move to SmackDown from NXT.
On the newest episode of Talking Smack (available now on Peacock & WWE Network), John "Bradshaw" Layfield was asked if Gunther has the potential to have a long title reign, similar to the one he had with the WWE Championship in 2004, to which he responded with, "Absolutely!" He continued on to explain what makes Gunther so special, even saying he would have made a good member of his and Faarooq's iconic "Protection Agency."
"He got it a little bit later in life just like I did. There's a lot of similarities there. I've wrestled a lot in Europe and the UK, and that is a different style. It's a very physical style. It translates very well into the American style and I think people are gonna have a hard matchup with him just as they had with William Regal, Fit Finlay, Tony St. Clair, and all the great guys who came out of that area. They're going to have a hard time with Gunther. The one big difference between him and most of the guys coming out of there is that he is a physically dominating presence. He is as physical as anybody I've ever seen. He would be a great member of the APA," JBL said.
