Kenny Omega To Face Will Ospreay At NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17

The dream match is set for NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17.

Will Ospreay successfully retained the IWGP United States Championship at NJPW x STARDOM Historic X-Over by defeating Shota Umino.

After the bout, the lights went down and Kenny Omega appeared on the screen. Omega said Ospreay was meant to replace him when he left in 2019, but he failed and is an Omega knock off. He said he received a call from NJPW and he would return at Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4 to face Will Ospreay in a match for the fans.

Ospreay accepted the challenge.

It wasn't made clear if the IWGP US Championship would be on the line.

Omega hasn't competed for NJPW since losing the IWGP Heavyweight Championship to Hiroshi Tanahashi at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 13 in 2019. He left the promotion to help form AEW.

Ospreay and Omega recently competed on opposite teams in the AEW Trios Titles tournament on the August 31 episode of AEW Dynamite. Omega & The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) defeated Ospreay & Aussie Open (Kyle Fletcher & Mark Davis) in the bout.

They have only faced once in singles competition back in 2015 at PWG All Star Weekend 11. Omega was victorious in the bout.
