Mark Briscoe On AEW Continental Classic Losses: I'm In My Rookie Season As A Singles Wrestler

Mark Briscoe discusses his struggles in the AEW Continental Classic.

For the better part of two decades, Mark Briscoe teamed up with his brother Jay, and they competed around the world. They won the ROH World Tag Team Championship 13 times and cemented their status as one of the top teams in wrestling. Jay tragically passed away in January 2023, and Mark has transitioned into singles wrestling. In recent weeks, he has competed in the AEW Continental Classic, but he has lost every match so far.

During a virtual signing with K&S WrestleFest, Mark Briscoe was asked about his losses in the AEW Continental Classic. He first described how he spent 22 years as a tag team wrestler alongside Jay Briscoe.

“I’ll tell you. I don’t mean to sound like I’m making the same excuse over and over, or sound like a broken record that happens to be making excuses, but I’ll put it in this perspective for you. I’ve been a tag team wrestler for 23 years, I mean from May 2000 up until December 2022. That was 22 years of tag team wrestling. Me and my brother, we left our mark on this business, on this sport. I’m not trying to toot my own horn or toot our own horn, but we’re the baddest team to ever do it. Nobody could get down like The Briscoes can get down in multiple situations in multiple different situations. There were some people that might be able to run with us in a technical, classical tag match. There might be some people that could run with us in a no DQ Deathmatch. There might be some people that could run with us in a ladder match. There might be some people that could run with us in any type of match that you could say, but there’s not one individual team that can do it all like The Briscoe Brothers can do it. The way we can get down, nobody ever got down like that before in professional wrestling history. So that’s 22 years," Briscoe said.

Mark Briscoe then stated that he views this run as his rookie season as a singles wrestler. He stated that he is not happy he is losing, but he knows he is fighting hard. Mark noted that he has to figure out the nuances of singles wrestling, and he looked forward to doing big things in 2024.

"My first career, from 2000 to 2022, that’s tag team wrestling, made it all the way. I’m happy with what we accomplished in 22 years. But now here we are, 2023, going about to go into 2024. I consider this my rookie season as a singles wrestler. So as a rookie singles wrestler, I’m not trying to make excuses. I don’t condone losing. I’m not happy that I lost. Oh, it’s my rookie season so it’s okay that I lost. No, it’s not okay that I’m losing. But I’ve been losing these Continental Classic matches, I’ve been giving them hell every single match. But yeah, I just gotta figure out this singles, the nuances of singles wrestling as compared to tag team wrestling. Don’t worry, I think 2024, you’ll see big things from Sussex County’s favorite son," Briscoe said.
