It was nothing personal for the most part.
This match between "The Villain" Marty Scurll and 25-year veteran Christopher Daniels did not have many personal ties to it but it was more-so a battle with many implications tied into it. There has been an on-going storyline that has been building up for well over a year involving Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian and Ring Of Honor C.O.O. Joe Koff. It was made clear that Daniels and Kazarian's contracts expired at today's 'Final Battle' pay-per-view and the only way those contracts would be renewed is if Daniels and/or Kazarian left the event with a championship or as a number one contender.
Tonight at 'Final Battle', Daniels went one-on-one with Marty Scurll and if Daniels won, he'd get to stay in Ring Of Honor because he would be the new number one contender to the ROH World Championship.

It was a clash of styles between Marty and Daniels. Marty focused in on the neck throughout the match and that would later benefit his Chicken Wing and 'Graduation' finishing maneuvers. With all the experience, it was the grit of Marty Scurll that earned him the victory over Christopher Daniels.
Once the bout was over, Daniels received a standing ovation from the crowd inside the Hammerstein Ballroom and was showered in streamers.

It was reported last month that Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian did not sign new deals with Ring Of Honor and today while being interviewed by ESPN, Daniels stated that regardless of the outcome at 'Final Battle', he would continue on with his wrestling career.
Two more members of SCU - those being Scorpio Sky and Kazarian are defending their ROH World Tag Team Championships in a Ladder Wars match in the main event. Head over to Fightful's live coverage article to stay up to date with the action.
