Mercedes is ready for next month.
In just three weeks WWE will begin the tapings for the Mae Young Classic II on August 8th and 9th at Full Sail. Fifteen competitors have already been announced thus far including the returning former WWE Divas Champion Kaitlyn, Fightful alumni Deonna Purrazzo, Mia Yim, Killer Kelly and others.
A name that will be making her second straight appearance in the Mae Young Classic tournament is the current WXW Women's Champion Mercedes Martinez. Martinez made it to the semifinals of last year's Mae Young Classic until she was defeated by the eventual finalist and current NXT Women's Champion Shayna Baszler. 'Newsweek' broke the news of Mercedes partaking in the M.Y.C. II and the outlet spoke with her to get her thoughts on this year's field among other topics. Mercedes named three individuals in particular who she is excited to see go to work and those names were Jinny, Kaitlyn, and former 2-time World Of STARDOM Champion Io Shirai.
“I’m very excited for Jinny, who I’ve been watching for the last two years. Her hard-hitting style and her aggressiveness, we’ll match very well,” Martinez said. “For Kaitlyn, I know she’s been training in Miami so I’m excited to see her come back and see what she can do. Even Io Shirai, who I was hoping to have a chance to wrestle before she got picked up when STARDOM came down to the U.S. It’s a very talented core of women, but there’s new faces, new talents. I have to work ten times harder than the young bucks.”
Martinez also stated that she is hopeful that there will be an all-women's wrestling show and that announcement is expected to be made this Monday by way of WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon. For more information on that, click here.
