The menacing big man reveals the inspiration behind his character.
Tonight's Ring Of Honor show entitled 'N.Y.C. Excellence' will be live from the infamous Hammerstein Ballroom. That ballroom will soon bear witness to a dark presence; ROH's resident and hellish big man Punishment Martinez. Martinez will be teaming up with the current ROH World Tag Team Champions The Briscoes and the trio are looking to lay waste to their their opponents "The Hung Bucks" (The Young Bucks & Adam "Hangman" Page).
Prior to having his presence lurk over the New York City crowd Punishment Martinez was interviewed by Newsday and the 6'7 big man revealed that the inspiration behind his character came from none other than "The Demon From Death Valley" The Undertaker.
"It was a segment where The Undertaker stuffed the Ultimate Warrior in a casket, and they were trying to get it open because he couldn’t breathe,” said Martinez. "That changed my perspective on wrestling. That was the moment where I became a die-hard fan, and knew, pretty much, that I wanted to do that." He continued, "I think the character of The Undertaker kind of guided me in life in certain ways, because I was such a big fan and I was so drawn to him,” Martinez said. “People always say to me, ‘Are you demonic or satanic or whatever?’ Absolutely not, I’m just in love with the idea of the weird, the odd, the dark . . . That started, realistically, because of the character of The Undertaker.”
Punishment Martinez will get to perform in front of his hometown crowd tonight as he is a New York City native. To view the full lineup for tonight's show, head over to ROHWrestling.com.
