R-Truth discusses the rise of Black champions in pro wrestling and how it feels for many of them to be citing him as an inspiration and giving him his flowers.
R-Truth has been a staple of TV wrestling since the early 2000s and whether it was in WWE or TNA, Truth was always setting out to break barriers en route to building his own legacy.
In 2024, Swerve Strickland is the current AEW World Champion, Trick Williams recently captured the NXT Championship, Oba Femi is the NXT North American Champion, and Carmelo Hayes was just drafted to WWE Friday Night SmackDown, headlining his first night on the brand in a match with Cody Rhodes.
Speaking on the Battleground Podcast, Truth commented on how special it is for him to be cited as an inspiration by these men and openly congratulated Swerve Strickland on his history-making AEW World Championship victory.
"I get emotional. It's a prestigious honor," he began. "Let me say this, I want to congratulate Swerve. Definitely gotta congratulate him man on his achievement, his accomplishment. I meant to call you. I'm sorry I haven't called you yet. I'm gonna text you. He's been killing it for a while, but he's so talented, man, so humble. [He's] so well-deserving of what he's doing now. You're just seeing the beginning of him, Trick, [Oba], Carmelo, these guys are just like -- it's such a good time to be a part of this. It's such a good time to see these guys give me my flowers. Strickland has always talked good about me, man. Again, it's a surreal moment for me man to be in the position I'm in."
