Rey Mysterio begins a new reign as WWE United States Champion in an unexpected fashion.
Santos Escobar was slated to challenge Austin Theory for the WWE United States Championship on the August 11 episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown. However, Theory did his best to get away with not defending the title by jumping Santos backstage, injuring his knee, and then jumping him again when he tried to make his entrance for the impending title match.
Theory did not get off that easy, however, as Santos Escobar agreed to have Rey Mysterio step into the title match in his place. Rey Mysterio would come away with his third WWE United States Championship after beating Austin Theory with the 619.

It was later announced that Rey Mysterio would appear on the Grayson Waller Effect on the August 18 episode of WWE SmackDown.
