Rich Hering Says He Still Gets Residual Checks For Officiating Randy Savage-Miss Elizabeth Wedding

Rich Hering says he's still receiving royalties for officiating "The Match Made in Heaven" at WWE SummerSlam 1991.

While Rich Hering primarily worked behind the scenes at WWE in his role as Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Risk Management, he did appear on-screen as the officiant of Randy Savage's wedding to Miss Elizabeth at WWE SummerSlam 1991 in Madison Square Garden. While WWE weddings are notorious for ending in chaos and disaster, Savage and Elizabeth's fairytale ceremony went off without a hitch (until Jake Roberts gave them a cobra as a present, which wasn't shown on the actual pay-per-view).

Hering reflected on that special night during an appearance on Ciliberto and Friends. He revealed that he is still getting residuals from that event over 30 years ago.

"That was the largest wedding I ever did. It was in Madison Square Garden. I’m still getting residual checks," he said. "They were going to do the wedding in Madison Square Garden, and I was talking to Vince [McMahon] and Pat Patterson about getting someone to do the wedding. Vince said to me, ‘You’re a judge.’ ‘Yeah.’ I was Town of Liberty, Associate Village of Liberty, and Fallsburg Town Judge for four, five, six months when there was a vacancy of both judges. I was appointed by the chief judge in the Fallsburg court, which I held for several months. [Vince] says, ‘Rich, you’d be the perfect person to do the ceremony.’ ‘Yeah, I’ve done quite a number of them over the years.’ That’s how that happened."

Rich Hering was honored for his contributions in 2021 as he received the Warrior Award at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony.

Hering retired from WWE in 2023. Learn more here.
