Rob Van Dam discusses the decision to have Edge help him win the WWE Championship from John Cena at ECW One Night Stand 2006.
Rob Van Dam's defeat of John Cena in the Hammerstein Ballroom in June 2006 is one of the most memorable moments from that era of WWE and helped kickstart the ECW brand revitalization. However, while it is the most significant moment of his career, WWE didn't exactly let RVD have a clean victory that made him feel like he had reached the pinnacle of success. The referee for the match would be knocked down, and Edge would come in, charging John Cena with a Spear through a table, leading to a Five-Star Frog Splash and a pinfall counted by Paul Heyman.
Speaking with D-Von Dudley in a recent video on D-Von's YouTube channel, RVD mentioned feeling insulted that the decision was made to have a run-in be the catalyst for his WWE Title win. Still, he says he understands the big picture of everything as he ages.
"I understand, now, the bigger picture of everything because that's what you do when you're older," he said. "But this night, I would have rather Edge didn't come out. I would have rather just beat him by myself. I felt a little insulted. I just felt like this was another thing where they didn't trust the ECW or thought that ECW needed some more. So, my ego was a little taken back by that."
RVD has admitted that he never truly felt comfortable in WWE because the promotion often felt the need to humble him. Read his comments here.
John Cena has also reflected on that infamous moment at ECW One Night Stand 2006. You can check out his comments here.
