Ronda Rousey highlights the lack of depth in WWE's women's tag team division.
On the May 29 episode of WWE Raw, Rousey and Shayna Baszler won a four-way match for the vacant WWE Women's Tag Team Championship. The titles have been the source of some questionable booking since they were introduced in 2019, as WWE has often thrown teams together and split them up. As a result, the division hasn't had a lot of depth in recent years, especially after the company released several competitors throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview with Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post, Rousey commented on her title win and noted that there's a clear lack of competition. Rousey stated that she and Baszler want to be fighting champions, but there aren't many contenders. She stated that the women's division is "dismally shallow," and the biggest challenge will be getting the company to invest in it.
“Well, the lack of competition is really the problem. I mean, we want to be the most active champions out there. I want to be able to defend this title every week and even twice a week on both ‘SmackDown’ and ‘Raw’. But with how dismally shallow the women’s division is right now, there’s not enough women around here to keep us busy for a month. So that’s the biggest challenge that we have is to get this company to actually care and invest into this tag division," Rousey said.
Rousey continued by referencing the way the women's division changed throughout her time away from the company; she took some time away in 2019 to become a mother, and she didn't return until WWE Royal Rumble 2022. Rousey stated that the division was stripped clean, and now everyone else is trying to piece something together with the remains.
“It was like the entire women’s division just got stripped clean. Now we’re the women that are the women that are left trying to piece together, you know, stories and a division, a tag division with around 10 women or even less on each roster. I mean, we’re trying the best that we can to make chicken shit into chicken salad, and we made some amazing chicken salad (Monday night)," Rousey said.
The former SmackDown Women's Champion also noted that she and Baszler have been lobbying to team together "for years", and now that they finally have the chance to do so, Rousey expressed her confidence that their on-screen friendship will remain strong.
“I think that’s the one thing that really sets us apart from every single person, every single tag team in, in the history of this company is that we’ve, we came here already tested and we came here already closer than anyone’s ever been. We’ve literally fought together, bled together, cried together everything. So there’s nothing that’s going to tear us apart, especially not a fantasy-land company like this," Rousey said.
Prior to their win on the May 29 episode of WWE Raw, Rousey and Baszler hadn't competed in a tag team match together since WWE WrestleMania 39 in April. The titles were vacated after Liv Morgan suffered an injury, so she and Raquel Rodriguez were forced to relinquish the titles.
