Stevie Ray Confirms Why William Regal Was Fired From WCW

Stevie Ray says William Regal was fired for making Goldberg look bad.

In 1998 on WCW Monday Night NitroWilliam Regal faced Bill Goldberg during Goldberg's historic winning streak. At the time, Goldberg was ending most of his matches within a minute or two. Goldberg and Regal wrestled for more than five minutes. Regal used his grappling prowess and open-hand strikes to delay the inevitable. Eventually Goldberg landed his spear and jackhammer combination for the victory.

Four-Way Match Added To AEW Full Gear: Zero Hour

On an episode of Stand Up For Greatness, host Stevie Ray responded to the rumors Regal was fired for embarrassing Goldberg. Stevie Ray said to his understanding, that is exactly why Regal left WCW in 1998.

"I think he crossed the line that night. He really made the guy who they were giving a big push to...very embarrassing looking. It really exposed him for not knowing anything around the squared circle," said Stevie Ray. "The thing is we all knew he was going to do it. He didn't have to (tell us), we knew Regal. Regal's not fixing to lay down for no body. Regal is one of these Blackpool, England...going into the alley and knuckle fighting guys," he continued.

Stevie Ray also mentioned Regal had been suspended before the Goldberg match. According to Stevie Ray, Regal was arrested on an airplane for urinating on a flight attendant and this resulted in a short suspension by WCW. Stevie Ray could not say if the suspension played into his later firing.
