Tony Khan comments on CM Punk.
Former AEW World Champion CM Punk has been absent since the aftermath of AEW All Out 2022, as he reportedly got into an altercation with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson). He was stripped of his title and suspended, and Punk was also sidelined due to a torn triceps. Punk's return has been buzzed about for months, and it will finally happen on the premiere episode of AEW Collision on June 17.
Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Khan commented on Punk's looming return. He stated that Punk hasn't been seen in a long time, and he's very important, both to the fans and to AEW itself. Khan also noted that the launch of AEW Collision lines up with the schedule of Punk's rehab for his injury.
“We haven’t seen CM Punk in a long time, since All Out last September. He looked great in his last match. To the fans, he’s very important. He’s very important to the company, too. He’s been a big draw for us and historically throughout his career, and the launch of the new show happens to line up with the schedule on his rehab of his triceps injury," Khan said.
Khan also discussed the upcoming premiere of AEW Collision on June 17 and called it an amazing opportunity. The AEW CEO made it clear that he was excited about the addition of the show, which he called the brainchild of Warner Bros. Discovery's David Zaslav. Khan also noted that Punk's return lining up with the launch of Collision was an exciting combination.
“We have an amazing opportunity with AEW on Saturday nights on TNT, starting June 17, and it was truly the brainchild of [Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president] David Zaslav. He asked about more AEW, specifically Saturday nights, on TNT. When it was pitched to us by TNT, I was so excited. It’s so exciting the timing [of Punk’s return from injury] coincides with the launch of Collision," Khan said.
Khan will announce the main event of the AEW Collision premiere on the June 7 episode of AEW Dynamite.
