Tony Schiavone: AEW Holding A Show At MSG Would Be Great, But I Think It's Impossible To Get It Done

Tony Schiavone doesn't think AEW will run MSG.

New York City has been known as WWE's home base for decades, and while this bond has softened in recent years, the association remains strong. Since 2021, AEW has been running their Grand Slam event at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York.

Speaking on his What Happened When podcast, Tony Schiavone discussed the September 22nd, 1997, episode of Monday Night Raw, which was held at Madison Square Garden. He was asked to comment on where he ranked Madison Square Garden on the list of important wrestling venues, and he said that he thought it was number one. Schiavone was then asked about whether AEW running a show there would be a pie-in-the-sky dream.

"I don’t know if it’d be a dream come true for me. I think it would be great, but I think it’s impossible to get it done. Because of the stranglehold [WWE] has had on MSG," Schiavone said.

Conrad Thompson then brought up ROH and NJPW holding up G1 Supercard at MSG in 2019, as he noted that it seemed like there wasn't a total barrier to holding non-WWE events there.

Rafael Morffi, who was the Vice President of Live Events and Touring at AEW at the time, previously said that he spoke to MSG about AEW. Check out his comments here.
