Trick Williams reflects on his run alongside Carmelo Hayes.
Trick Williams was initially featured on NXT as Carmelo Hayes' hype man and tag team partner. Williams gradually became a breakout star on his own, and Hayes turned on him. They feuded, and Williams beat Hayes in the main event of NXT Stand & Deliver. Trick's rise continued at NXT Spring Breakin' Week One, as he defeated Ilja Dragunov to win the NXT Championship.
Speaking on WWE's The Bump, Trick Williams was asked to describe how being by Carmelo Hayes’ side prepared him for this moment.
"Everything, man. That rapport, y’all saw the way the whole arena was jumping [when I won the title]. That’s because I have a rapport with that audience. They’ve seen me grow for three years almost, and that all started being alongside of Carmelo Hayes. When I first got there, Carmelo was the man. He just won the Breakout Tournament, and it was my job to make Carmelo Hayes look as good as possible. I took my job very seriously. By doing that, the harder I went for Carmelo Hayes, the more people got to see me, like, ‘I kind of like this guy.’ It just all worked in my favor. It wasn’t intentional, I was just doing my job, trying to help Carmelo Hayes. Me doing my job so hard really helped me build that rapport with that audience, and here we are today," Trick Williams said.
