Triple H is currently in England doing a little press tour and he dropped in on BBC 1 radio earlier today. He was asked who his favorite feud was, and he answered the Rock, to which the host brought up the fact that The Rock could seemingly get anything over, even a move as ludicrous as The People's Elbow. Triple H then volunteered the story of how the People's Elbow went from a joke designed to make the Rock's opponents break character all the way to "The Most Electrifying Move In Sports Entertainment."
Apparently, it all started at a house show.
"You know where you're working in some of the smaller places, you've been on the road for 300 days, and it becomes 'Let's just try to make (The Undertaker) break character, or whatever it is," Triple H began. "One night, Rock did The People's Elbow, which wasn't known as "The People's Elbow" it was known as 'Watch This Move That's Going To Make All Of You Lose It.'"
The Rock did the move during a couple more non-televised matches, and then "There was a night where we were all working a tag match on TV, and (Mick) Foley was like: 'I dare you to do that elbow tonight.'" The Rock obliged, and the rest is history. "These things morph in those ways, but they catch on. Trust me, we’re quick to go, ‘Ooh, they like that, I’m sticking with that.'”
Triple H knows the move was ridiculous, but he gives the Rock his due for making it work, no matter how silly it was.
"Look, I loved working with Rock, so this is in no way disparaging of him at all, but it is the hokiest move ever. You’ve gotta wait for like 20 minutes while he takes his elbow pad off and works the crowd,” Triple H explained. “He runs back and forth, then he comes up and drops an elbow on you that looks like it barely touches you, except that a lot of times the point of his elbow hits you right in the mouth and you come up bleeding and you’re like, ‘how can you bust me open on that?’ It’s just one of those things, and it's also so funny that you’re laughing all the way to the bank with it.”
