Vince McMahon reacts to the passing of one of his closest confidants in the industry, Pat Patterson.
This morning, the wrestling world lost one of the true visionaries in the history of the industry as Pat Patterson passed away at the age of 79.
The inaugural Intercontinental Champion was not only one of the great legends of the territory days of wrestling, but one of the key players in the expansion of the WWE and a trusted mind for not only other wrestlers to confide in as they were putting together matches but for Vince McMahon as he was planning his strategies for the growth of his Northeast promotion.
Through his decades as a producer, Pat Patterson is credited as being the mind behind such matches as Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart's Iron Man match at WrestleMania 12, Hulk Hogan vs. The Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania 6, and he was the inventor of the Royal Rumble, a match that has become a staple of professional wrestling culture and one of the true iconic events in WWE's catalog.
Taking to Twitter, as so many in the industry have, to react to this passing, Vince McMahon reflected on his friendship with Pat Patterson, reflecting on the overall legacy of the WWE Hall of Famer.
Pat Patterson was more than the first Intercontinental Champion & father of the Royal Rumble Match. He helped lay the foundation for WWE as we know it. His mentorship shaped careers, his creativity sparked innovation and his friendship lifted spirits. Love you, Pat. We miss you. pic.twitter.com/TugpAOrN6O
