Vince McMahon: We Put The Machine Behind Lex Luger And Thought He Was Gonna Be Awesome. He Was Nowhere Near Hulk Hogan

Vince McMahon comments on the failed push of Lex Luger in 1993.

Lex Luger was quickly moved from being a narcissistic heel to an All-American babyface following Hulk Hogan's departure from WWE in 1993. Lex Luger was given a massive push, which started when he slammed Yokozuna on the USS Intrepid on July 4, 1993, and continued with a massive bus tour across the United States.

Ultimately, Lex Luger defeated Yokozuna at WWE SummerSlam 1993. Still, he did not capture the WWE Championship, and his push slowed to a halt following a second failed attempt to do so at WrestleMania in 1994.

Vince McMahon briefly touched upon Luger's failed push attempt during the "Mr. McMahon" docuseries on Netflix. McMahon admits they did everything they could to put the machine behind Luger. Ultimately, the former WCW Champion didn't come close to filling Hulk Hogan's red and yellow boots in McMahon's eyes.

"We did put the machine, so to speak, behind Lex Luger and thought he was going to be awesome. Lex was okay, but nowhere near Hulk Hogan."

In the past, Lex Luger said that Vince McMahon had never promised him a run with the WWE Title. Read his comments here.

Janel Grant, a former WWE employee, filed a lawsuit in January against Vince McMahon, WWE, and John Laurinaitis. The lawsuit accuses McMahon of sexual assault and sex trafficking. On May 30, Grant agreed to pause the lawsuit for six months while the federal investigation continued against McMahon, who resigned from TKO/WWE following the lawsuit.
