WWE 2K took a year off after WWE 2K20 was plagued with bugs and issues. During the investor call in April 2020, it was confirmed that WWE 2K21 would not be made. Instead, WWE and 2K Games released 2K Battlegrounds, an over-the-top arcade action game.
It was reported in January that 2K representatives were at WWE Royal Rumble with voiceovers and scans being done for the game.
