According to PWInsider, Cole's contract expired at Midnight on May 1, making him free to sign with any promotion he wished.

There is no word as to where Cole is heading next, but him being a free agent doesn't necessarily rule out a return to Ring of Honor. That being said, Cole has stated recently that he hasn't made a decision yet as to what the next step will be in his wrestling career.

"I'm gonna kind of look out and see what everyone else has going on and what else is out there and then kind of play it from there," he said in a recent interview with ESPN. "We'll see as far as negotiating any type of contracts, whether that be with Ring of Honor or with another company."

There have been reports and rumors that Cole would be WWE-bound in the near future, but there hasn't been any information whether discussions are actively taking place. Cole has gone on record to state that he'd like to go to NXT before the main roster should he sign with WWE.

"I think the brand is cool," he said in the same interview. "I think the Takeover shows are awesome. I think the fans are great. I love the roster of guys."

He added that he views the NXT brand as something special in the world of professional wrestling, and it's something that he wants to be able to say he was a part of.
