Becky Lynch: Original Gimmick was 'Terrible'

Looking back, WWE Smackdown Women's Champion Becky Lynch cannot help but cringe when thinking about the original Irish gimmick she had when she debuted in NXT.

Lynch was asked about the gimmick as part of an ESPN media call promoting WWE's upcoming tour of the United Kingdom.

“Let us never talk about that again," she said. "You know what, you can’t get worse than that. Sometimes you’ve just gotta fricking make a fool out of yourself and then you become little bit untouchable. So, I tell ya, it’s gonna make one hell of a biography one day, I hope. That was terrible, and we all know it was terrible. Let nobody else say anything different.”

Lynch's title victory at Backlash marked her first championship in WWE, either on the main roster or in NXT. She started training to wrestle in 2002 when she was just 15 years old and worked on the independent circuit in the United States, UK and Japan as Rebecca Knox. In 2006, she suffered a serious head injury in a match that included cranial nerve damage and would not wrestle again until 2013, when she signed a developmental contract with WWE. She's considered one of the "Four Horsewomen" to come up through NXT to prominence in the WWE. The others are Sasha Banks, Bayley and Charlotte.

She was asked on the call about the possibility of the foursome forming a faction now that all are on the WWE main roster.

"I think we’re better fighting each other, to be honest with you." she said. "That’s where magic happens. But who knows? I could see it happening very easily, especially with the talent we’re gonna have coming up from NXT soon, with Asuka, and Billie Kay and Peyton Royce, to name just a few. I don’t know if we will be reunited as a group, as a unit. But we will be reunited to main event Wrestlemania.”

Lynch is set to defend her newly won title next Saturday, October 9, at No Mercy against Alexa Bliss.
