With commentator David Otunga currently out filming his role in WWE Films' "Katrina" project, where he is battling his own linguistic challenges, Booker T has been filling in as the third man on the Raw broadcast team.
On the latest episode of his Heated Conversations podcast, recorded just before the Payback pay-per-view, Booker shared details of what led to his return to the desk.
"I work under a team and the leader of that team right now is Michael Cole," Booker said.
Booker noted that Cole called him about returning to commentary in Otunga's absence.
"They actually asked me if it was possible for me to come back," Booker said. "Of course I'm going to be there. That's my job."
Booker noted he had a trip planned to Australia and Qatar this spring when approached about joining the Raw commentary team, but that he canceled the trip and, apparently, did not have to waste a lot of time on that decision.
"When duty calls, that's what it's all about," Booker said. "For 26 years, I've been that guy that, even when I'm late, I'm always on time. If you call me and it's my job, I'm going to be ready to go out there and get it done. … that's what the business is all about."
This is not the first time Booker T has been behind the commentary desk. After making his return to WWE in 2011, he spent more than a year as a regular part of the commentary team on Smackdown as well as pay-per-views. After a stint as Smackdown general manager and another as an analyst on WWE Network kickoff shows, he returned to Raw as a commentator in early 2015, then switched to Smackdown, where he remained until January of last year.
Otunga is expected back on commentary by the end of May.
