A new women's championship will be coming to Smackdown, and tag titles probably will follow soon after that.
Appearing on the Bear Hug It Out podcast on Tuesday, Smackdown general manager Daniel Bryan confirmed that a women's title exclusive to Smackdown would be coming to the WWE "blue brand" later this year.
Bryan noted that "we are taking our time with it to make sure that we do it right", adding "It's good that they [the two WWE brands] have their own separate championships,"
Last week, WWE announced the creation of a new Universal Title to be the main championship on Raw with Dean Ambrose and the WWE World Heavyweight Title the property of Smackdown.
It has been reported that new women's and tag titles would be coming to Smackdown, although the introduction of these championships reportedly will not happen until after Summerslam, which will take place August 21 from Brooklyn and feature matches from both the Raw and Smackdown brands.
Becky Lynch, Natalya, Eva Marie, Carmella, Alexa Bliss and Naomi are the current female wrestlers assigned to Smackdown. Maryse, currently managing her husband The Miz, also would be an option if she decided to return to the ring as a competitor. A separate division on Smackdown also could yield immediate chances for call-ups such as Bayley or Asuka to make a splash on the main roster, or Nikki Bella when she returns from injury.
The current tag scene on Smackdown consists of American Alpha, The Vaudevillains, Breezango, The Ascension and the Usos. Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder, who tagged together in NXT as the Hype Bros, teamed together on last week's episode of WWE Main Event which could signal their inclusion in the tag ranks as well.
