Jim Ross says stranger things have happened than Jinder Mahal winning the championship.
Mahal recently became number one contender for Randy Orton's WWE World Championship. The two will meet in a match at WWE Backlash. Mahal became number contender by winning a six man match with the help of The Singh Brothers. He had recently come to Smackdown as part of the Superstar Shakeup. Before switching brands, Mahal had been on a long losing streak on Raw. In a recent blog, Ross discussed Mahal's meteoric rise and the response by "a handful of pundits."
"The Jinder Mahal ascension on the SDLive roster including him being the #1 contender for the WWE Title seems to be being overthought to some degree by a handful of pundits," wrote Ross. "The rapid advancement up the card of Jinder has some concerned, and I get that point, but I see it as worth the chance and, fast track or not, Mahal is somewhat of a calculated risk which is essentially the same thing that most promotions deal with when advancing new talents who suddenly appear on the main event radar," he continued.
Ross does not think it would be outlandish to put the title on Mahal.
"I like this booking because it involves a deserving, hard working talent who has unique skills, is fundamentally sound and has a unique, TV persona plus he provides Randy Orton with a new opponent.Question...what if Jinder Mahal becomes the next, WWE Champion? Stranger things have happened and it's not the worse idea that I've heard lately. This shocker might be worth a bit of consideration," wrote Ross.
He went on to write Mahal could use with less yelling on the microphone. Ross mentioned in his blog some other highlights of Smackdown including Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, and Charlotte Flair. WWE Backlash is May 12th.
