In their long-awaited trilogy matchup, undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Álvarez is planning to return to the ring in September and face unified middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin.
Álvarez spoke Monday during his annual golf invitational in Naucalpan de Juárez, Mexico, and revealed his plans to face Golovkin in a third meeting next, instead of opting to immediately rematch undefeated WBA light heavyweight champion, Dmitry Bivol. Álvarez dropped a unanimous decision loss to Bivol earlier this month, which was his first professional defeat in nearly nine years.
"We already had that contract [with Gennady Golovkin], that agreement, so we have to continue what we started, and I think those are the two biggest fights in boxing, the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol," Álvarez said (h/t ESPN). "Unfortunately, we lost, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try again. The important thing here is perseverance and we're going to do it again. What is certain is that we are going to return in September. And in the coming days, we are going to announce the fight."
