UFC Interim Welterweight Champion Colby Covington is expected to be stripped of the title when the bout between UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley and Darren Till kicks off at UFC 228.
Although Covington may no longer be a champion when UFC 228 commences, it doesn’t mean the next title shot wouldn’t be going to the outspoken fighter.
That’s because UFC President Dana White has stated that Covington is next for whomever walks away with the gold at UFC 228.
“Colby Covington is going to get the next shot,” White told BT Sport. “Usman got the opportunity (as a backup) because Covington is hurt.”
Covington was originally supposed to be in Till’s place at tonight’s event, but injuries kept him from cashing in on the title shot.
Kamaru Usman is the backup plan in case Till came in overweight for UFC 228, which he didn’t, but despite the backup status, no title shot is coming Usman’s way for now. Usman is sitting at #6 in the UFC Welterweight Division Rankings, while Covington is on top of the mountain at #1.
UFC 228 takes place on Saturday, September 8 from the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas with Tyron Woodley and Darren Till headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast
