Cortney Casey talks Michelle Waterson matchup, Training Full Time At The MMA Lab & "Orange Is The New Black"

Cortney Casey is back in action in just a little over a month as she faces Michelle Waterson at UFC On Fox 29.

The fighter is coming off of a loss to Felice Herrig at UFC 218, but it's a bout that Casey had thought would her way on the judges scorecards.

“We were pretty surprised, we were all pretty surprised. We pretty much executed the gameplan to a T, I could have been a little bit more aggressive. She’s super strong, we didn’t think she would go for any takedowns…the double legs or the single legs. We figured she was just going to catch me over committing and get that body lock and throw me to the ground, which kind of happened in the first round against the cage. That was just a mental error on my part, but once it went to the ground, I had no problem sweeping her or anything like that. We thought that we won that exchange at the end of the day, but it went in her direction and that’s what happens when it goes to the judges. I don’t have a very good rapport with the judges, I think I have only won one fight that has gone to the judges. Its something I try to stay away from, but unfortunately it went to the judges and it went her way and that’s kind of how it goes. I learned a lot from that fight, it was the first fight with the (MMA) Lab…full camp with the lab. At the end of the day, my coaches were happy and I was happy with my performance. We just chalk it up and we move on,” Casey said in an exclusive interview with Fightful’s James Lynch.

Decisions haven’t always gone in favor of Casey during her professional MMA career, as the fighter has lost four of the five fights that have gone to the judges scorecards.

We are about a month away from Casey’s next bout and the fighter has already begun the weight cutting process.

“That process has started, its been a process. I walk around at a pretty decent size and I just kind of got to dial in on my weight cut. Slowly but surely, I get there. I set little individual goals…daily goals…weekly goals, I have it all up on a calendar and I weigh-in at least three times a day making sure everything is on target,” says Casey.

UFC On Fox 29 takes place on Saturday, April 14 from the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona with Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, which airs live on Fox.
