UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov retired after a victorious main event at UFC 254 and Nurmagomedov’s final request was to be on the top of the UFC’s pound for pound fighter list, which doesn’t sit well with Jon Jones.
Jones would take to Twitter after UFC 254 to congratulate Nurmagomedov, while also abdicating the top spot on the list, at least until he wins the heavyweight strap (via MMA Junkie):
I want to congratulate Khabib for an outstanding career. I know he made his father along with millions of fans around the world incredibly proud today. May God continue to bless him on his journey.
Until I take that heavily crown, I grant you the spot. Enjoy Champ
15 world titles, numbers don’t lie.
Definitely a powerful moment, but my logic is definitely not clouded.
The former light heavyweight champion is still on the top of the list as of this writing, but that could change when the UFC updates their rankings on Tuesday.
