The UFC Women’s Flyweight Title is going to be defended for the first time as UFC 228 according to the champion herself as Nicco Montano defends against Valentina Shevchenko.
There seems to be some doubt in the challengers mind as to whether or not the fight will actually happen, as Shevchenko posted the following on Twitter a few days after the bout was reported:
Hey Nicco, finally !

Montano (4-2-0) won the title back at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale, where she defeated Roxanne Modafferi by unanimous decision. Montano is also a former King Of The Cage Women’s Flyweight Champion, defeating Jamie Milanowski to win the gold in October of 2016. Montano also competed for the HD MMA Women’s Flyweight Title, but suffered a unanimous decision loss to Julia Avila in January of 2017.
Shevchenko (15-3-0) is currently undefeated at flyweight, having defeated Priscila Cachoeira by second round submission at UFC Fight Night Belem. Shevchenko has previously challenged for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title, losing to then champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 215. Shevchenko has suffered a total of three defeats as a professional MMA fighter, with those losses coming to those who have held or challenged for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title.
UFC 228 takes place on Saturday, September 8 from a location to be announced with a main event to be announced. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
