A huge welterweight division bout is in the works for a yet to be announced UFC event this January according to MMA Junkie as #4 Stephen Thompson is in action against #5 Robbie Lawler.
Thompson (14-3-1) has won just one of his last four fights under the UFC banner and that lone win came over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 217. Thompson has twice before challenged for the UFC Welterweight Title, fighting Tyron Woodley to a draw at UFC 205 and then suffering a decision loss to Woodley at UFC 209. Thompson has seen his last five fights go the distance and it has been almost three years since the fighter got a finish.
Lawler (28-12-0-1NC) is going to be returning to action for the first time in over a year, as his last bout took place at UFC on Fox 26 in December of 2017. Lawler is a former UFC Welterweight Champion, defeating Johny Hendricks to claim the title at UFC 181. Lawler also hasn’t picked up a win in over a year, as his last victory came at UFC 214 in July of 2017.
The yet to be announced UFC event is scheduled for Friday, January 18 from a location to be announced with a main event to be announced. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, while broadcast plans have yet to be announced.
