A welterweight division attraction has been added to the September 19 UFC card as former UFC interim welterweight champion #2 Colby Covington faces former UFC welterweight champion #5 Tyron Woodley.
MMA Fighting first reported the bout, whose spot on the card isn’t known at this time.
Covington (15-2-0) is competing for the first time since losing to UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 245. Covington is a former UFC interim welterweight champion, defeating former UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos to win the gold at UFC 225. Covington has seen his last five wins come by decision and it has been almost four years since the fighter got a finish.
Woodley (19-5-1) comes into the contest riding a two fight winning streak, dropping bouts to the duo of Gilbert Burns and the aforementioned Usman. Woodley hasn’t picked up a win in nearly two years, with his last victory coming at UFC 228 in September of 2018. Woodley is a former UFC Welterweight Champion, defeating Robbie Lawler to win the gold at UFC 201.
The September 19 UFC card could be either UFC 253 or a Fight Night card, as Ariel Helwani of ESPN previously reported that the UFC could change the dates for those shows.
