Rene Alvarado has won his first world title.
In a rematch against Andrew Cancio headlining the November 23 Golden Boy Promotions card on DAZN, Alvarado scored a stoppage win over Cancio to capture the WBA "Regular" super featherweight title. The fight came to a stop after seven rounds as Cancio was dealing with a nasty cut above his left eye.
The bout ended Cancio's title run that started with a shocking win over Alberto Machado back in February. Cancio and Alvarado first fought back in 2015 with Cancio initially coming out on top with an eighth-round win.
In the co-main event, Chinese star Xu Can dominated Manny Robles III to retain the WBA "Regular" featherweight title. Can was extremely busy in the fight, throwing more than 1,500 punches throughout the 12 rounds, shattering a featherweight record for one boxer. With the win, and Leo Santa Cruz more than likely vacating his WBA "Super" featherweight title after capturing the WBA super featherweight title, Can is likely headed for a big 2020 and look for a potential unification bout against Josh Warrington.
