Former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre was supposed to fight UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping for the gold upon his return, then UFC President Dana White canceled the fight.
Despite canceling the middleweight title shot for GSP, the UFC President now says that a returning GSP is now going to fight for the UFC Welterweight Title.
“Georges St-Pierre will come back who knows when, November, December or next year, and he’ll fight whoever the champion is at 170 [pounds],” White said on UFC Unfiltered. “I’m not very confident in when GSP will return. So we’ll see.”
GSP never actually lost the UFC Welterweight Title ,as the fighter was stripped of the title when he retired over four years ago.
The Canadian also hasn’t returned yet due to an eye injury, but the UFC President says that the promotion waits for nobody.
“I don’t wait for anybody,” White said. “The world moves on and we keep on rolling and when he comes back, he’ll come back and he’ll fight whoever the champion is at 170 [pounds].”
Tyron Woodley is the current UFC Welterweight Champion and he last defended the belt against Stephen Thompson at UFC 209, that win came by way of decision.
