Later this year, fans of both MMA and boxing could see arguably the biggest combat sports event of all-time if the bout between UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. comes to fruition.
If the fight does come to the Nevada Athletic Commission, it would be a fight that is well within its reach to be approved.
“That (Finances) doesn’t dictate whether it’s approvable,” NAC Executive Director Bob Bennett said to MMA Fighting. “It’s their actions in the cage and in the ring. And it is an anomaly. But as far as boxing concerns, it’s an approvable fight. Obviously, this fight will be a lucrative fight. But our No. 1 priority is still the health and safety of the fighter.”
The UFC fighter recently had his fine from a UFC 202 water bottle throwing incident reduced by the NAC, clearing the way for him to get his boxing license in the state.
According to Bennett, the bout would come down to McGregor’s power against defense of Mayweather Jr.
“Conor is a knockout artist,” Bennett said. “Floyd is a boxer. Floyd has arguably, in my opinion, the best defense in the history of boxing. He’s a very smart fighter.”
When or if the fight does eventually come together, rumors suggest that it would be taking place this September at a location to be announced.
