Authors of Pain (Rezar & Akam) returned to WWE at WWE SmackDown New Year's Revolution. The duo attacked Bobby Lashley & The Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins) and were joined by Karrion Kross and a returning Paul Ellering.
AOP took out Street Profits with a Super Collider while Kross laid out Lashley.

On the December 22 episode of WWE SmackDown, Kross hinted that he needed "authors" to write his greatest proclamation.
The Authors of Pain are former NXT and WWE Raw Tag Team Champions. They were released by WWE in September 2020. Fightful Select reported that they were at the WWE Performance Center in August of 2022 and re-signed before 2023.
