Grimes tearfully shared his thoughts in response to the news. He stated that he loved working for the company, and he thanked everyone who helped him along the way. Grimes said that fans had not seen him much, but he was trying his best to learn. He noted that the release lit a fire underneath him, as all he ever wanted to do was work. Grimes said that wrestling was all he had, and there was no stopping him. He told the fans he loved them, and they would figure it out. Grimes also said that WWE was all he ever wanted, but if he had to go somewhere to show them they missed out, that's what he would do.

Grimes had been with WWE since 2019. He had a featured run as "The Richest Man in NXT", and he was involved in a storyline with Ted DiBiase. During the storyline, Grimes won the Million Dollar Championship. Grimes also captured the NXT North American Championship during his time in NXT. He moved to the main roster in the 2023 WWE Draft, but he rarely appeared on television during his last few months with the company. Grimes last wrestled on the April 12 episode of WWE SmackDown, where he lost to Bron Breakker.

Grimes, also known as Trevor Lee, previously wrestled for TNA/IMPACT Wrestling. He is a three-time X-Division Champion and a former World Tag Team Champion.

On April 19, Fightful reported that WWE released Jinder Mahal, Veer, Xia Li, and others in a wave of cuts. Before Grimes, Von Wagner was the latest wrestler identified as part of the round of releases. More information is available here.
