Japanese Deathmatch Legend Dr. Luther was once considered to be the leader of The Dark Order at the suggestion of Chris Jericho.
On the latest episode of Talk is Jericho, Chris Jericho interviewed AEW wrestler Luther, a man who is one of his oldest friends in the business. Jericho reveals that Luther is one of the five names he recruited to the fledgling promotion along with Matt Hardy, Jon Moxley, Jake Hager, and Dean Malenko.
Early on in the discussion, Jericho reveals that, although Luther appeared in AEW as part of Brandi Rhodes’ Nightmare Collective, Luther would actually be brought in with the intention of applying to be the head of The Dark Order.
“So I got that [audition] and I sent it-- The Dark Order's kind of Nick and Matt's thing. I was more thinking well let me just show it to Tony and Cody, you know Tony's the boss, right?" Said Jericho. "Cody was like, 'I like his delivery, he's got that cadence of Jake Roberts.' I think then they said well let's bring him in for some like basically a screen test.”
Jericho would go on to mention, in passing, that ECW alum, James Mitchell was also considered to be the head of The Dark Order but Matt and Nick Jackson had other plans.
He continued, “I think right off the bat The Bucks, I think they wanted, I think the original plan so and was Marty's Scurll to be the leader of The Dark Order and then they wanted Matt Hardy which then morphed of course to Luke Harper. So I think that you were kind of out of the equation because they had other guys.”
The Nightmare Collective would be a short-lived faction, much to Luther's delight as he did not enjoy working in the women's division because it did not allow him a chance to get physical.
In regards to being Jericho's friend and getting a spot, Luther says he won't comment on the matter much but he does have one answer that he feels absolves him of any favoritism.
“The only time I'd say anything to anybody is if that was the case, I would have been in WWE a long time ago. End of story.”
Luther can regularly be seen on AEW Dark. Recently, he was featured in a series of matches against Jimmy Havoc.
