Rhodes extended the title shot to Owens on the August 9th episode of WWE SmackDown. Owens initially declined the title shot, saying he doesn't deserve it, just look at his win-loss record over the past year. Rhodes said that Owens has sacrificed and has been there for him. Rhodes said that Owens is a prizefighter in the prime of his career and he would talk to Nick Aldis and explain why he wanted to face Owens at WWE Bash In Berlin.

Later in the night, Owens and Rhodes met with SmackDown GM Nick Aldis. Aldis said that he was thinking of giving Roman Reigns the title match, but Owens didn't believe Roman deserved the match based on how he won his championship matches. Aldis said that Cody feels Owens deserved the match and the fans felt Owens deserved the match, so he was giving the title match to Owens.

Owens not only helped Rhodes at WWE Summerslam, but he helped the Undisputed WWE Champion on WWE SmackDown, saving him from a potential attack by The Bloodline (Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, & Tonga Loa).
