Cody Rhodes Says Potential Jeff Cobb-AEW Deal Is “Still In Gestation”

Although Jeff Cobb made his presence known on AEW Dynamite earlier this month, he still has yet to sign a deal with the company.

When Cobb first appeared on AEW Dynamite on February 12, rumors circulated regarding his contract status and his commitments with other promotions, mainly Ring of Honor. Cobb is still scheduled to compete in Ring of Honor shows for the next couple of months and AEW EVP Cody Rhodes addressed Cobb’s current status with AEW.

In a media conference call, Cody said Cobb and AEW are still talking and a deal to have him stick with AEW is “still in gestation.” Cody spoke highly of Cobb, but said he doesn’t want to take away from Cobb’s commitments or any desires he may have in wrestling for any number of promotions.

“It’s still in gestation. Jeff works with New Japan, he works with Ring of Honor and now he works for AEW. I’m a big fan of Jeff Cobb because I like shooters in wrestling. I don’t try to consider myself one with my limited amateur background, but I think Jeff is a tank. He’s a special athlete. So I think, to be transparent with you, it’s in gestation. I would hope that he would pursue the longer thing with AEW, but I don’t want it to impede anything that he is doing. If he wants to travel the globe and do all kinds of stuff, have at it. That’s one of the great things about AEW. There’s no blanket contracts. Everyone’s contract is different about what they can do and where they can go. Tony Khan has tailored contracts to meet their sensibilities like, ‘Hey this independent means a lot to me,’ or ‘Wrestling at Wrestle Kingdom means a lot to me.’ Whatever they be, our doors are open for business. But with Jeff, I’m sorry, but I have to keep it vague. We don’t know just yet. We have Jeff for more than just the Atlanta show, but I’d love to see Jeff in more of a long-term deal with us. He’s a special talent,” Cody said.

Cobb is scheduled to face off against Jon Moxley on the February 19 episode of Dynamite. Fightful will have live coverage of Dynamite.
