With SummerSlam coming up in August, WWE is reportedly hoping to have John Cena compete at the event.
Reports indicate that WWE is looking at Cena facing Roman Reigns at the event, but if Drew McIntyre has his way, he will be in line for a match against Cena at some point.
Speaking with On Demand Entertainment, McIntyre was asked about a potential showdown with Cena.
"I hope it does happen. I've been around John since I was 22 years old. I just turned 36 and we've never had any singles match, which blows my mind. We've been in tag matches and multi-man matches, but never a singles match. Where I'm at today in my career and managing to reach the top of the industry after so many ups and downs, and where John is at, he's just on another level. He's conquered WWE, conquering Hollywood, but he still loves WWE more than anything and wants to come back and help and have those big matches. There's no bigger match, as far as I'm concerned than John Cena vs. McIntyre," he stated.
McIntyre and Cena shared the ring in January 2019 in a fatal four-way number one contender's bout for the WWE Universal Title. The match also featured Finn Balor and King Corbin.
Cena recently stated that he will return to WWE, but no official date regarding his return has been announced.
As for McIntyre, he will look for a new challenge after failing to capture the WWE Championship against Bobby Lashley at Hell in a Cell. Per the stipulation of the match, McIntyre can't challenge for the WWE Title again as long as Lashley is the champion.
