EC3 says being released by WWE motivated him.
When EC3 came back to NXT, he had been gone from WWE for about five years. When he left in 2013, NXT was a completely different show and was simply developmental instead of it's own brand. After being released, EC3 soon found himself at Impact Wrestling (then known as TNA) and had a new character as Dixie Carter's nephew.
On E & C's Pod of Awesomeness, EC3 was asked about his motivations after being released by WWE and moving onto Impact Wrestling. EC3 said when he went to Impact Wrestling he did so well because of his feelings about being released.
"No disrespect to (Impact Wrestling) and the opportunity they gave me but I think I'm better motivated when I have a vendetta more than when I have happiness. I'm driven by angst, anger, depression, vengeance," said EC3.
EC3 went on to become a two time World Champion and Grand Champion at Impact Wrestling and was featured in some of the biggest storylines on television at the time including his long undefeated streak.
