Gunther comments on potentially vacating the WWE Intercontinental Title if he wins the world championship.
Gunther is having a record-setting run as the WWE Intercontinental Champion. He won the gold on the June 10, 2022, episode of WWE SmackDown, and his reign now spans nearly 600 days. The powerhouse also had a remarkable showing in the 2023 Men's Royal Rumble match, as he set a new record for the longest time spent in the match. Heading into the 2024 Men's Royal Rumble, Gunther confronted World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins on Raw and said that he planned to win the battle royal and dethrone him at WWE WrestleMania 40.
Speaking with Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp at the media day ahead of WWE Royal Rumble, Gunther was asked whether he would vacate the Intercontinental Championship if he won the world title.
"There is a point to the challenge (of defending both). I haven’t really thought about it. It’s a decision that has to be made. I have to start thinking. It’s a sensible topic. On one hand, the challenge is very interesting. On the other hand, I don’t know if it does the title justice if it’s a side project. We will see," Gunther said.
In November 2023, Gunther said he would never drop the WWE Intercontinental Championship on purpose, even if it meant getting a shot at the world title. Click here to see what he had to say.
Gunther previously said that he had outgrown the WWE Intercontinental Championship, and he was ready for the next step. Check out his comments here.
Fightful will have live coverage of WWE Royal Rumble as it airs on January 27.
