Joe signed with WWE in 2015 and after six years was released in April 2021. He was re-signed two months later and began working, on-screen, alongside William Regal in NXT. He would eventually begin feuding with Karrion Kross and defeated him for the NXT Championship at TakeOver 36. He relinquished the belt in September due to an undisclosed injury and had not been seen on TV since.
A three-time NXT Champion and two-time United States Champion, Joe had also been working behind-the-scenes in NXT and at the Performance Center.
Samoa Joe commented on his release saying that he is sad he didn't get to see the future of WWE evolve first hand but he's very excited for their future and his own.
Extremely fortunate and grateful to all the young & amazing talent I had the pleasure of working with in the past months. Only saddened at the loss of an “excuse” to see their continued growth & achievement . I am very excited for there future,….. and mine --
