Most recently, the host of Outkick's Maintaining with Tyrus opened up about his weight loss journey, much of which he attributes to becoming more accountable having had "some real talk" with himself on the Maintaining with Tyrus show. Tyrus also spoke about becoming more confident in himself and being able to practice more self-control in terms of his eating habits as a result of getting older.

Other factors impacting Tyrus' weight loss pursuit include his coming to terms with his weight and the issues it may be causing him. This included his needing a cane to help him get around — a tool he has since successfully let go of after making progress with his weight loss. Another weight issue Tyrus faced had to do with travelling on planes. Tyrus' trainer explained that the former NWA World Heavyweight Champion would gain weight on the plane due to water retention caused by the pressure of flights. Since moving to New Jersey to be closer to his job in broadcasting, Tyrus no longer has to fly as much.

Tyrus' wrestling career and shift to broadcasting

Before signing his first contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Tyrus initially played college football for the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers football program. Tyrus' weight management journey fluctuated throughout his nearly two-decade-long wrestling career. So much so that the former wrestler faced criticism in his final wrestling match, with fans noting the star's underperformance in defending his NWA World title against EC3. Even so, we highlighted insights from NWA Owner Billy Corgan on how Tyrus ultimately achieved his goal of wanting to "tell a story where he went out in his shield".

Prior to his major shift into political podcasting, Tyrus also had his share of screentime in television shows such as MacGyver, The Purge, and as a regular panelist in Gutfeld! In June 2023, prior to Tyrus' official retirement, the wrestler hosted the premiere episode of Fox News Saturday Night, where he periodically hosted throughout the year. This helped set him up for the eventual career shift into broadcasting. In January 2024, Tyrus announced he would helm a new series for streaming platform OutKick. The show's tagline describes it as a sitdown with "some of the biggest names in sports, entertainment, popculture and in the news for real talk."

Weight loss for health maintenance

As described, Tyrus' weight loss journey has much to do with the former NWA wrestler embracing his age. Now more than 50 years old, Tyrus spoke about coming to terms with the fact that he's not going to be lifting "super heavy" like his WWE peak form was able to. Instead, Tyrus stated he had embraced being 50 and the wisdom that comes with it. Among various weight loss methods, Tyrus cited intermittent fasting and lean proteins like fillet mignon as a way to shift more weight.

While Tyrus' current goal is to get under 300 pounds in his weight loss journey, it's important to note that weight loss widely differs for every individual, depending on your lifestyle and any existing health conditions. Therefore, people who struggle to lose weight can join a GLP-1 weight loss program to get tailored care and a medication plan if necessary. These programs are meant as added support and guidance for those currently on weight loss medication. The program also encourages healthy lifestyle changes and active tracking based on research by obesity specialists and behavior-change experts. This includes setting daily goals like protein, water, fruit, and vegetable intake, as well as physical activity goals to help maintain muscle as you lose weight.

Another crucial aspect of joining weight loss programs is the access you get to a support system, which can contribute significantly to weight loss and weight management success. This includes access to expert coaches and workshops, as well as a community of likeminded members with whom you can share experience, tips, and advice.

Today, weight loss medication has become a popular go-to for overweight or obese patients who may be struggling with weight loss. Insights from Reuters revealed that the rising demand for weight loss drugs has led to experts forecasting a market jump to $150 billion. In 2023, top sales estimates were in the $100 billion range. Meanwhile, global spending on obesity medications totaled $24 billion in 2023, with market researchers expecting an outlook of $131 billion by 2028.

Healthy weight loss methods

In discussing his weight loss journey, Tyrus cited various weight loss methods, including his work with coaches like Rob Macintyre to commit to making healthy weight changes. Aside from intermittent fasting and fillet mignons, Tyrus also discussed the significance of low-impact exercises like stretching instead of trying to lift heavy for his age. Another positive influence in Tyrus' weight loss journey may also be wife Ingrid Rinck who runs a fitness empire including a company focused on portion-controlled meals and virtual workout classes. Tyrus shares three children with Rinck and fans are often granted glimpses of the children's milestones on Rinck's Instagram profile.

Other healthy weight loss methods also focus on lifestyle adjustments such as regular exercise. For men with athletic backgrounds like Tyrus, it's also important to consider factors like body recomposition when trying to lose weight. This involves the delicate balancing act of losing fat and gaining muscle, which can be a conundrum. Burning more calories is essential to lose fat, but increasing protein intake is also integral to building muscle. To get through this hurdle, experts recommend prioritizing one goal before the other, such as muscle building over fat loss. Fortunately, putting muscle building first can foster healthy habits and physiological responses that can still help burn fat.
