Gable Steveson doesn't have any regrets.
In 2021, Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson signed an NIL deal with WWE. He appeared at WWE WrestleMania 38, where he suplexed Chad Gable. Steveson had a run in NXT in 2023, and he competed in his first televised match at NXT Great American Bash 2023. He competed in a few dark matches in early 2024, but the company released him in May.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Gable Steveson was asked whether he regretted his WWE run.
"No. I don’t regret anything. I don’t regret going down that path. I don’t regret playing for the Buffalo Bills. I think I’ve had so many great experiences that it was just an experience that you’ve gotta learn from and understand the business in the right way next time you come back," Steveson said.
Steveson was then asked whether he was disappointed about his time in WWE and if there was anything he wished he would have done. He noted that some disappointment was inherent, and he said that he felt like he could have done a lot more in the business. However, he was focused on moving forward.
“Of course there’s gonna be disappointment. I feel like I could have done so much more in the business, and I could have lasted a really long time. But like I said, business is always gonna be business, and business doesn’t stop for anyone, and it’s not gonna stop for me, even if I’m an Olympic champion. So there’s no problem with it. I’m good to go. I’m going through with college wrestling again and restarting everything and getting back to where I was," Steveson said.
When asked about his reaction to his departure, Steveson noted that he went back to wrestling practice and focused his energy there. He was then asked whether he felt upset about what had happened. He noted that there was some resentment, but he reiterated that he was moving forward.
“Definitely some, maybe some resentment of what if, what happened? What went wrong? But like I mentioned before, nothing’s ever gonna stop, and I feel like I have a lot of talent to do a lot of great things, and I work hard, I’m dedicated, and that wasn’t gonna be my closing door," Steveson said.
Helwani then asked Steveson to comment on whether he was shutting the door on professional wrestling, and he stated that he was not. He said that he wanted to keep the door open. In general, Steveson said that when things didn't work, maybe he could try again later.
“No, I would love to keep it open, if it’s always there. Anything I do, just keep it open. If it doesn’t work, maybe you can try again. Life’s all about getting chances, and if you can get the best chance possible in the future, take it," Steveson said.
During the interview, Steveson discussed the end of his time in WWE. Check out his comments here.
Steveson has returned to the University of Minnesota for a fifth season as a wrestler. More information is available here.
